334 – Yclept

Sorry it’s been so long since I posted something new. I have been sidetracked by a combination of work and homelife issues. I have been struggling to make anything, other than my contributions to the Disquiet Junto project.

Here’s a piece made in the early hours of the last two nights. It evolved through playing with the randomisation function of Absynth to created a rich layer of sounds all playing the same, simple riff. A few other samples have been included to give it a little momentum and richness.

It goes by the name of Yclept. ;)

I hope you like it?

New Tools

I have finally succumbed and purchased my first iPad and have immediately set about installing a few of the apps recommended on the various blogs and forums I look to for advice.

I have recently been part of the brilliantly conceived Disquiet Junto project by Marc Weidenbaum and have come to enjoy the idea of constraint as part of the creative process. What may seem as a step back in terms of raw computing power, sophisticated DAW apps and plug-ins, could actually help forge my sound and point it into a fresh direction. Pieces may be solely created on the iPad or I may use it as starting point and transfer ideas to my main PC for completion. Who knows? Time will tell, although at least an EP of iPad only stuff is my minimal aim.

I don’t, as yet, have a midi/audio interface, but one is planned when finances allow for it. The list of apps I have initially installed is as folllows… Animoog, Sound Prism Pro, NLog Pro, Sunrizer, csGrain, Mega Curtis, Space and Node Beat. I’ve yet to decided on something to pull these together, such as Nano Studio, but I will update this list soon.

It may take a little time for things to come to fruition but hopefully it will be worth the wait.

333 – Automatic Doors

This v.experimental piece is a recording taken yesterday of the automatic doors of a supermarket in Addlestone, Surrey. It’s a really amazing sound and I can’t think why they’ve chosen such noisy, if harmonic motors.

I’ve simply layered three versions of the recording, each warped a little in pitch, to thicken things, and slightly effected the overall mix with some eq and a little reverb.

I hear a sound that reminds me of childhood days playing in tower block lifts, with the sound of the wind whistling through the elevator shafts in which we travelled along with the clunks, clicks and the singing electrical motors.

Hope you like it?

332 – Beware The Jabberwock

Someone I follow on Twitter because her tweets are often random and delightful… @burntbroccoli, posted an Audioboo, a recording of her reading a snippet of Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky. I thought it was enchanting and wanted to embellish it a little.

This is the result. I love her voice on this. Hope you do also.

Holocene – Bon Iver [ambienteered]

I love Bon Iver. I played around with a track of theirs during my lunchbreak.

I hope they don’t mind a little bit of stretching, layering and effecting.

Only available as a stream for copyright reasons.

Latest release on Bandcamp – Hiemal – Free Download

Just a little announcement to let you know that my latest release ‘hiemal’ is now available to download for free from Bandcamp. Grab it while you can as Bandcamp does limit the number of free versions.

331 – Deliquesce

Here is another piece made for the Disquiet Junto project that I have been persuaded to share here also. Lots of lovely feedback about this piece has also ensured that this track is the final one on my next release (more of which will follow later today).

330 – Coldhead

There is something about the end of winter that lifts my mood and has my mind daydreaming of better days ahead.

However, it’s also the time when all the bugs and colds seem to flourish. You go to bed feeling fine, have a restless night (no change there) and awake in a totally blocked up state.

I have a sore throat, raspy cough, headache, super-loud tinnitus and a general wish to stay in bed.

So with my coldhead, I quickly made this representation of the sound of the inside of my head when I woke and the mood I am in because of it.

This piece was created for the fantastic Soundcloud Disquiet Junto project a few weeks ago. Due to the positive nature of the comments I recieved, I have decided to share it here also, as well as adding it to my next release.

328 – Early Bird

A restless night with lucid dreams led to my being wide awake at 6am. This piece was an attempt to make something that would help me drift back off into some kind of slumber.

The birds were beginning their dawn chorus, but I didn’t really want to have to go outside and record them, so I searched online for something I could use. The background birdsong sample used is from http://www.freesound.org/people/klankbeeld/sounds/117113/. It’s a lovely dawn recording of a Dutch village, yet it closely resembled the sounds eminating from the garden into the bedroom. This helped me stay warm, for which I am grateful, but alas sleep never returned.

Maybe it will prove useful to you as an aid, easing into these tail-end of winter mornings?
