Here is an insight to what will be appearing here over the next few days, should I manage to be creative over the next week. This piece is very simple. The sound is a very tiny sample of Malena Ernman, the Swedish Eurovision artist’s voice. Beefed up to sound organ-like and playing 3/4 loop of basic notes. I will be sampling Eurovision 2009 and seeing what I can creative from it, building instruments first and then tracks.

Whilst watching the NASA space walk my speakers started to get some interference from a nearby mobile phone. It got me wondering what the sound of the transmission of data from Hubble to Earth would be like if you could include the sound of space (yes it’s a vacuum, but this is all imaginary anyhow). So, out came Reaktor and here’s the result.

Continuing on from yesterday’s discovery of 9beetstretch, I have decided to risk putting up my own reworking of the Ralph Vaughan Williams classic, The Lark Ascending. Not quite a 24 hour piece as my laptop won’t manage that. This piece weighs in at around 66 mins. I did manage to make a 200 minute version, but I figured it to be too large for my site’s bandwidth. Some may be annoyed, saying that I’ve ruined Britain’s favourite classical tune, but my strange head loves this version. It is just an experiment and for now will end here.
It is not available to download and won’t appear on my compilations. Despite my manipulations, it is essentially the complete work and I have no copyright clearance. It is available only as a 320k stream.

In an attempt to freshen up my ideas a little, this piece is a sample of a section of music (uncleared, as I am not releasing it for any profit whatsoever). It should be extremely tilted and barely recognisable. It has been stretched and looped, effected and then had more of the same for good measure.
It has a haunting, ethereal, ghost-like feel to it. I have kept the volume low on purpose. It really needs headphones and a quiet, low lit space.
So although I can’t call this all my own work, I do hope you like it nonetheless?
If you work out what it is from, you will no doubt have a v.clever brain that can reverse engineer easily.
*UPDATE*
It’s a 90 second sample from Beethoven’s 9th. The rather surprising thing for me was that my twitter pal @hiddenplace pointed out this to me… I had no idea… http://www.expandedfield.net/. At least the idea was a good one, if not unique. I may well experiment a little more with less obvious classical pieces though.

Just discovered a new favourite word that perfectly fits the current climate of political absurdity in the UK. It’s the title of my latest experiment with generative music. The idea behind this piece is that everytime you get wound up by the latest greedy MP as they bemoan their position and justify the way they have had their face buried in the trough of freely available tax-payers money, you put this on. Let the chimes and the calm pronouncment of how Britain is being managed to wash over you. Maybe, we should find the MPs that have been fair and honest with their expenses, anti-war, driven by service and persuade them to form a new cross party group and elect them to run things for a bit? OK, rant over! ;)

Feeling a little under the weather today, so I have kept things very simple. This little piece is essentially a sound that I have made in my lunch hour, played in a three chord rotation for a couple of minutes. Listening to it is soothing and is helping me feel a little better.

Continuing on from the last track, my experiments with texture rather than melody have led me to create this rather long piece. I first put together a piece of generative sound and resampled it. I then shifted it down a few octaves and layed some effects over it. This brought out some hidden harmonics and frequencies.
This is best listened to with headphones, late at night or whenever you are able to lay back, close your eyes and drift. The 320kbps version is a hefty download, so I am also including a 192kbps version, just for this track.

A day in Brighton visiting the Open Houses has opened my eyes to some other areas of creativity that I would love to explore. I might revisit some mixed-media painting ideas that I was playing with at the beginning of this year. This piece has come of out my thoughts on how I might submerge myself into all things artistic.

Another remix for you. This is a take on the fourth track from my ambient audio diary, Ennio.
The rather talented James Lowery, aka Swaying Smoke, has reworked it into a brooding dark ambient piece that I really like. The track called ‘O Nine’ is available to download for free here. Whilst at his site, take a listen to some of his other work. I particularly recommend that you check out his latest release ‘Hidden Beneath the Soil’. In his own words ‘This album describes the dark things hidden underground, lurking in forgotten passages and tunnels, mixed into the very ground that we walk.’
It is available for free download from the Public Spaces Lab netlabel website.
Thank you James for taking the time to rework something of mine.
