167 – Konets

I’m unsure why, but once again I have ventured down the ‘number stations’ path. This piece uses a small sample from a broadcast that went out in the former West Germany. It has an eerie, unsettling feel, that oddly, I love.

166 – Drift

The dark afternoon is playing around with my senses, leaving me feeling heavy and lethargic. I have to work another late shift tonight, so I took an hour away from the day job to make something that I could run through my headphones to let me relax and drift for a while.

165 – Two Years

Two years ago today I met Nickie, @nixnoo.

We spent our first few hours together, sitting in the Rothko room at the Tate Modern. It didn’t take me long to realise how much lucky I was to have found her. I love her to bits. :)

We are not together today, but will be in a few days.

I made this little piece for her in the early hours before sunrise.

164 – Rise

I watched the sun come up this morning. As the light took hold of the sky I thought about how it might sound. This piece was made using a piano sample in Simpler inside Live. About a dozen different effects were added and this is the result of my early morning fun.

163 – Aotea

A big big thank you to @imogenheap for her compliments on my messing about with her genius. She is so lovely. I can’t wait for her UK tour dates to be announced.

My head is in the clouds today, so I made this little floaty piece to try and put across how fluffy my thoughts are right now.

Wait it out

I just love Imogen Heap. She could sing the ingredients from the back of a cereal box and I’d be enchanted. I took the beautiful vocal snippet from the second track on her album ‘Ellipse’ then stretched, effected, transposed and layered small segments of it. The result is an eight minute dream-like soundscape that still sounds just the way she does. Hope she’ll forgive my using a sample without permission? I’m too shy to ask for fear she’d not like what I’d made with it.

Only available as a stream for copyright reasons.

162 – Whalesong

A little lunchtime noodling session inspired by the Stephen Fry/Mark Carwardine BBC series Last Chance to See. Last night’s episode was particularly moving for both @nixnoo and myself.

Just a simple piece.

Ambient Compilation 16

Here is the sixteenth zip file containing the latest ten tracks posted.

There are two zip files, one for lower bitrate MP3s and the other for the rather better 320kbps files. Please note however that piece 153 – Pteran, is only available as a 320kbps file, so it’s not included in the 96kbps zip file.

All of the tracks here are free for you to download and distribute.

Thank you for listening.

161 – Merkwürdig

I decided to take a full lunch hour to truly go all experimental.

A few milliseconds of Imogen Heap is looped and manipulated in real-time inside Ableton Live using a ton of effects. Using only the mouse, no controller. This was a one-pass recording. I really don’t imagine that it will be a popular or note-worthy piece, but I love the strange sonic moments that pop up. You’ll just be able to make out the original fractional loop at the end. I hope Ms.Heap won’t be annoyed?

Getting the levels right was not easy, as it starts off quietly, so mind your ears/speakers further on in.

160 – Starless

In the early hours I was woken by the broken noise of the church and a car parked in the distance with barely audible music almost escaping. Outside the sky was black and starless. This is how it sounded to me.
