243 – First Contact
The results of my first foray into using contact mics.
Thanks to the generosity of Oli Bell @groovecriminals on Twitter, I have some new sound gathering methods to play with.
Born from an electric toothbrush spinning upon a few tight layers of cling film over a large bowl, with extra transients from my hot, sticky fingers upon the taut plastic. The short sample I chose to use was then thrown through a complicated effects chain in Ableton Live, layered and then looped to give it a life of its own.
It’s odd and different, but give it a listen? I like it! :)

Really nice stuff… what was it that you got from Oli Bell?
I know it’s not your style, but would you ever consider doing a screen video capture?
I’d love to take a peek into your process…

Thanks :)
I’m planning to make a ‘proper’ album over the next few months. I want to do things well and make it as good as possible. I am thinking of making a DVD alongside it that shows how I create my sounds etc. Keep an eye on this blog, because it’s where I will post any progress on this. :) Oli very generously made me some contact mics and a shaker box. It’s an area I am just about to begin exploring.
Oli doesn’t know this, but it’s probably the nicest thing anyone outside my family has ever done for me and I’ve never met or spoken to him!
