Woke again to a head filled with high-pitched interference and sounds that appear to be fractured. It could have been triggered by playing a little too much with some bell samples yesterday. This piece is the result of that play.

Niall was up in the night and once I had him settled, I was wide awake and it was 3am. I decided to try and create something to fit the stillness of the night outside and the pending sunrise. By 5am, it was complete.

In an effort to create something in a minimal amount of free time (work is busy), I set upon the idea of playing with ice cream van chimes. In the early hours of this morning, I made this using a very warbled and noisy sample.

It has an eerie and very melancholic sound, evoking a lost time, a faded snapshot of summers passed.

What do you think? Should I do more?

Finding it hard to create right now and it’s little accidental discoveries of found sounds whilst out, as well as late nights of trawling though hard drives, packed with odd samples, that are managing some sort of output to be possible. My current work appears to be a little too ‘out there’ for some it seems, but it’s where my head is.

I love the sound of resin on strings… so maybe this piece is a little more accesible?

Whilst at the local hospital I had a chance encounter with a ‘singing’ tap (faucet, for my stateside friends).

Luckily, I take my Zoom everywhere and despite some protesting glances, I grabbed a few seconds of its screeching beauty.

This has been stretched, layered and effected a little to become almost a free-form ambient jazz piece.

It won’t be for everyone.
