Played around in the early hours with some of the ambient sounds recorded at Leogland in Windsor. This is a montage of a few loops, heavily treated with effects in Ableton Live, with a simple sub harmonic synth lifting up the natural tones of the layered recording. Again, this won’t be for everyone, but I hope it pleases some ears.

In setting up my new workspace, I had to deal with ridding my set-up of ground noise/hum. I could hear a couple of buzzing frequencies in everything I was playing. Oddly, to me, it’s not always an unpleasant distraction.

I got to thinking how I could make a small noisy yet harmonic piece that could represent the sound fizzing through the wires under my desk.

Struggled the past couple of days to make anything of note. The hacking of the site and the subsequent server changes, home tutoring Niall and the day job have all taken their toll. Whilst teaching Niall about Black Holes, he asked how one might sound. So, I took a big bunch of Number Station recordings, treated them to tons of effects in Live and then stretched them massively. I played this to him last night and said, I think it could be something like this, if there wasn’t a vacuum in the way. He said, ‘like a hoover’, Dad?

This is worth a late night listen at 50% on headphones. The 20 mins will fly by… if you love a nice bit of drone, that is!? ;)

I’ve recently managed to get hold of a copy of The Conet Project-Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations and this little ditty is just something I came up with late before sleep last night. All of the sounds come from samples taken from the CD, manipulated in Simpler and effected within Live.

Over the coming weeks I will listen fully to these CD recordings to see if I can make a whole and proper release, using them as the backbone for the project.

More experiments with number station broadcast recordings. This piece is a little darker in mood than is normal for me. However, it reflects how I feel today. Somehow, I feel I know all that is wrong, when all that is right isn’t close.

I decided to take a full lunch hour to truly go all experimental.

A few milliseconds of Imogen Heap is looped and manipulated in real-time inside Ableton Live using a ton of effects. Using only the mouse, no controller. This was a one-pass recording. I really don’t imagine that it will be a popular or note-worthy piece, but I love the strange sonic moments that pop up. You’ll just be able to make out the original fractional loop at the end. I hope Ms.Heap won’t be annoyed?

Getting the levels right was not easy, as it starts off quietly, so mind your ears/speakers further on in.

This is a piece that stemmed from last night’s dream where I was waiting for a flight at the airport, but despite all the calls for flights, none of the chiming announcements were ever for mine. The generative bell sounds in this track evoke the flight calls and the ambient sound of simulated aircraft noise, hark back to an aural memory of life under a flightpath as a child. Airports used to be a joy for me.

Sadly I guess that the dream was born from the thought on sleeping of what happened eight years ago.

Thinking of everyone affected, not only in those horrendous attacks, but for all the innocent lives that have been taken in the conflicts since.

Lastly, today would have been my Mother’s 62nd birthday, but she died at Christmas in 2001. Happy birthday Mum. x
